Abortion glossary :: Conceptus
A conceptus is the complete product of conception, from fertilization to parturition, which includes the oocyte (fertilized), zygote, morula, blastocyst, embryo, foetus, placenta, all surrounding membranes, and other life-support tissues.
Conceptus components
- oocyte (fertilized), zygote, morula, blastocyst, embryo, foetus: the developing intra-uterine organism
- placenta: the essential organ that filters blood, fluids, and other materials, and transfers nutrients and oxygen
- membranes (including extraembryonic): supportive sacs, such as the amnion sac, chorion sac, and yolk sac
- life-support tissues: all other essential intra-uterine tissues
The word "conceptus" is used by scientists, doctors, nurses, etc., when discussing the developing intra-uterine organism, placenta, membranes, and life-support tissues as a complete group.
